I still love you, honey. It didn’t mean anything, he said,
And a year later, he was married to someone else.
I promise to make you happy, he said, as we stood
With the fire behind us and our lives ahead of us.
I believed him. I believed him.
Of course, you’ll see me again, said the sailor.
Every girl needs a good rope, said the cowboy.
That man doesn’t really want to be president,
Said the sailor, mistaken, again. The cowboy
Was right to warn me — but that’s all he was right about.
You left without a word, he texted me in ALL CAPS,
And worse, you didn’t have the decency to say why.
I guess I never really loved you, he said, although
It took me a long time to believe him.
