Heartstrings

I.

I will watch most anything featuring a horse,
And if there’s a dog I’ll settle in for the duration.
An old white farmhouse in the background forms
The trifecta, which can only be enhanced
By stormy weather or second-chance love.

II.

I feel a warm rush of joy when things come together, like
When the old white farmhouse gets a fresh coat of white paint.
I seldom trust a southern accent. Now, I might make an exception
If the lead male actor floats my boat, but I will not watch
To the end if the horse dies — or the dog.

III.

I’m most satisfied when the couple falls in love and drives away,
pulling the horse trailer behind a beat-up-but-serviceable pickup,
With the dog sitting between them on the worn bench seat.
Sometimes, you might need to leave to find the thing you want,
But first, go back, just once, and find your lost love.
