Our marriage is disintegrating and I know there is only one thing that would increase my happiness at the moment — and that is to get another dog. My husband is an alpha male who strongly prefers to govern all pack decisions. He doesn’t want another dog, ever, and he’s come up with a dozen reasons why getting one is impractical. But if anyone is in charge of saving myself, it has to be me — even if it means being sneaky, which I’m planning to be — just this once.

I’ve searched most of the shelter locations in three states and I’ve circled my favorite candidates. I’ve spoken to the persons in charge and I’ve arranged several visits. I’ve even made a list of my requirements. Since I’ve been surrounded by men all my life — brothers, sons, husbands, and doctors — I’ve decided that I’d really like to have a female dog; I’d like her to be over two years of age, which will help with behavior problems and potty-training; It’s really important to get a dog that doesn’t shed, because I hate cleaning up all that hair, and because I like to travel light and take my dog with me, I’m really interested in finding one under thirty-five pounds.
