Memories and Chocolate
One of the best things is yet to come…
When your children are young and learning to ride a bike,
You root for them, cheer them on as they grow in confidence,
From scooting with their feet to pedaling with training wheels,
To riding off on their own two wheels, with giant smiles.
And then, “Look Mom — no hands”.
But one of the best things is yet to come.
When they’re old enough to watch for cars
And reliably wear their helmets,
They can begin to play another significant role in your life.
Especially, if you’re a woman.
You can say you need their help.
You can hand them a crisp five-dollar bill,
Ask them to ride to the grocery store,
Where you have ridden with them many times before.
You can say, “Mommy’s having a chocolate emergency.”
You can say, “Don’t forget, it’s the extra-dark in the purple wrapper.”
And when they come home, the chocolate warm from the summer sun
And their plump child’s hands, you can share it with them. Or not. Perhaps, Your love for them is enough.
