My Hallmark Fantasy Life

A Poem

I smile when you awaken in the morning,
Your hair all mussed, sleep in your eyes.
In our clean kitchen, I make breakfast
While you make coffee, good and strong,
Not speaking until the caffeine kicks in.

You drink a cup, standing at the sink.
You look out, watch the dog play in the
Pile of leaves you raked up yesterday but
Haven’t had time to bag and bring to the curb.
Now, setting the spatula down on its holder

I leave the home-fries to sizzle and snap.
Take two steps and circle your waist with my
Long arms, lay my head against the curve of your
Back. You cannot see me smile, but you can feel
The apple of my cheek beneath your cotton shirt.

You cover my clasped hands
With your free hand, large and strong.
You pause to take a sip, and then I hear the smile
In the warmth of your voice as you ask,
What should we do today?
