Perfection is Overrated — Love Sees Past Our Blemishes

Men have told me stories about the loves of their lives, and I love hearing them. Unless they’re players, most men I know aren’t looking for perfection. They’re just looking for the person they want to spend the rest of their lives with — the lid to their pot, their better half, the right fit.

Probably because I grew up with three brothers and had a whole neighborhood of male friends as a child, men feel comfortable talking to me. Also, I’ve been listening for about six decades, so I’ve heard quite a few men share their stories. Here’s how I know that perfection is overrated.

What do you love about Patty?

Chuckle. Smile. “She has these cute little rabbit teeth. She’s wildly spontaneous. And she really loves to help people.”

What do you love about Lana?

She feels familiar. I can’t even describe it. I just immediately felt at home with her, even though she’s not my type. I’ve never dated anyone who looked remotely like her. And I used to hate her laugh. But now that I’ve gotten used to it, it’s just part of her, and I smile every time I hear it.
