Former Representative Adam Kitzinger (R) of Illinois was one of the first Republicans to recognize the destructive force of Donald Trump and the tremendous danger of another Trump presidency. With (then) Representative Liz Cheney (R) of Wyoming, Kitzinger co-chaired the house hearings on the January 6 insurrection. And yes, it was, by definition, an insurrection:

Insurrection: Defined under 18 U.S.C. § 2383, insurrection refers to any act of rising against the authority of the state or its laws. Legally, it’s the violent uprising against governmental authority. This includes taking up arms or otherwise actively opposing the government’s power and lawful authority.

In this case, the “lawful authority” was the U.S. Constitution, which has stood us in good stead for 235 years, and the government in power was headed by our legally elected President, Joseph R. Biden.

In a now-famous summary of the January 6 investigation, Representative Cheney spoke plainly:

“Tonight, I say this to my Republican colleagues who are defending the indefensible: There will come a day when Donald Trump is gone, but your dishonor will remain.”

It’s worth listening to it yourself, here in the video below.
