None of us has an easy life, because life is not easy. But I am easy to talk to and a good listener, a willing witness able to take in what my friends need to tell me. And so I hear about the marriages that withered, the heartbreaking miscarriages, the children who grew sick, the husbands who cheated, or worse. What could be worse, you may wonder? Don’t ask unless you are brave enough to hear the answer.

But when I listen closely, I hear in my friends’ voices the firebrand of resilience — and I know they will rise to fall in love again, have another child, start a new career, and move across the country to a place they’ve only visited in their dreams. The people I know are remarkably strong, forged in flames, solid as redwood trees, with hearts as tender as weeping children.

Life is hard, and you take time to celebrate the joy. Remember the night you pulled over to dance in a hayfield? That same night, you borrowed the fiddle and played a song, surprising your lover, who thought you were only good at riding horses, calming frightened animals, and raising children.
