My dog of twelve years died four months ago. Yes, you’re reading the story that goes along with this headline. Yesterday, a friend encouraged me to adopt an adorable pup that I’m a little obsessed with, but he’s in a shelter in California, a two-day’s drive from New Mexico. More importantly, I’m not ready. So, here’s what I said to her.

“If I knew that Covid was never going away or would get even worse, and the economy worldwide was tanking, and we were on the verge of the zombie apocalypse, I’d probably adopt a whole pack of shelter dogs and live surrounded by them until the very end.”

“Well, isn’t that what’s happening now?” my friend asked. “Aren’t we living through it?”

Well, are we? I am not yet willing to give up hope. Humans are incredibly ingenious when they need to be. Case in point — the six years between 1939 and 1945, otherwise known as WW2, which led to the development of computers, penicillin, and radar. Of course, this burst of invention also led to the atomic bomb and the horrors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, so there is a need to be selective when choosing our path forward: The wheel must turn, but we can choose its direction.
