I woke early at the knock on the door.
My neighbor, Cristobal, brought me
A cactus from his family’s land
On the Rio Chama,
North of Abiquiu.

I wrote 4,000 words that it’s possible
No one will ever read.
Nineteen elementary school students
Were murdered by a lone gunman,
In the lone star state, and so far.

I haven’t read, or heard, one word
Of remorse. Just politicians swearing to
Uphold Texan’s rights to bear arms.
My heart is broken.
How’s yours?
