The singer Jim Morrison once said, “A true friend is someone who gives you total freedom to be yourself.” A true friend will also tell you when you’re screwing up, but will continue loving you anyway. Sometimes they even give you much-needed advice to help you become an even better you — and that’s something we can all use.

Here are the “top 10” pieces of friendly advice I’ve received, complete with due credit:

“You really need a better bra.” As stated by pretty much every sales woman I’ve met. Which would be all fine and good if bras didn’t retail for $49.95.

“What happened to your eyebrows? Here, let’s just brush those in…,” friendly advice given my #1 BFF, quite recently. My thyroid function is normal and I haven’t been around any campfires lately. But when I look at old photos, there’s a clear difference. I blame tweezer-wielding pixies.

“Sometimes you look right through people like they’re not even there. Cut that out.” This was a significant moment of insight offered by my college BFF. Thirty years later I still struggle with eye contact, which, of course, is how I got into freelance writing from home in my pajamas. And living alone during a global pandemic? Well, let’s just say it…
