On Writing: Women’s Fiction Fans — Spill the Tea!
Hey, women’s fiction fans! What are some things about a book or story that make it really resonate with you? What makes it hard to put down, and what makes you invested in reading the sequel? Also, who are some of your favorite authors? Let’s spill the tea about women’s fiction authors and books, and maybe shed a spotlight on a few author’s that deserve greater recognition. I’ll start…
For me, the deciding factor is the ability to transport me to a place that exists only in the author’s imagination; the ability to create a sense of family and community that envelops the reader; and, the avoidance of boring tropes and plot lines. I really want believable sex scenes. I don’t love it when a character I empathize with is left hanging, but that only makes me want to read the sequel more.
Some of my favorite authors are Kristin Hannah (Between Sisters, Firefly Lane), Jamie Brenner (The Forever Summer), Nevada Barr (the Anna Piegeon mysteries, beginning with her first, Track of the Cat) and Jo-Ann Mapson (Along Came Mary, Bad Girl Creek, The Wilder Sisters). I was an early fan of the prolific writers Nora Roberts and Robyn Carr, and I still remember some of my favorite series, including Carr’s Virgin River. But, in keeping up with the times, I’m always open to branching out to new authors.
